Heavy Engineering Industries and Shipbuilding (HEISCO) has announced that its consortium has secured a contract worth US$160.2mn from Kuwait Port Authority for the implementation of rehabilitation works on berths located in Shuwaikh Port, which is operated by Kuwait Ports Authority (KPA).

In a statement, HEISCO said that the consortium consists of its subsidiary Gulf Dredging and General Contracting, as well as Hyundai Engineering and Construction. As a major EPC contracting company based in Kuwait, HEISCO has a diversified range of businesses in the oil and gas, petrochemicals, power, pressure equipment manufacturing, shipbuilding, and repair, dredging and marine construction.

In July 2021, Kuwait said it would spend $1.8bn on five strategic infrastructure projects.

In addition to this, it is also a specialist in major civil construction, maintenance and other industrial services including heavy industry projects.

As per the contract, HEISCO’s consortium will rehabilitate berth one to seven providing 1,330m berth length for general cargo (berth two to seven) and bulk cargo (berth one). The proposed new berths require special berthing and mooring facilities to accommodate general cargo, container vessels and bulk carriers, said the statement from HEISCO.

The berths will be equipped with mobile cranes with a capacity of 600t, reach stackers, and heavy trucks for handling and storage of incoming products from or to berthing vessels, the statement concluded.

In April 2022, Kuwait’s HEISCO and Mitsubishi Power emerged as the lowest bidders for the 2,400MW Sabiya Power Plant project. Later in the month, HEISCO said it won a $25mn contract from the US Army for marine construction works.
