Qatar has signed an agreement with Tekfen, a Turkish conglomerate, for the construction of a $2.08 billion highway, it has been announced.
The highway project will be part of the Al Khor Expressway project, and will span 34km. It will include 12 bridges and crossings, while linking Doha with Lusail, Al Khor and the new stadiums being built for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Qatar’s Ministry of Municipality and Environment said in a statement.
Once complete, the highway will consist of five lanes in each direction and will include eight intersections and pedestrian, bicycle and motorcycle lanes. Construction is expected to be completed within 30 months, the ministry added.
The deal was signed in Ankara by Qatar’s Minister of Municipality and Environment, HE Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Rumaihi. Also present was the Turkish Minister of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications, Ahmet Arslan. A senior official from Tekfen Holding Construction and the Qatar Ambassador to Turkey were also in attendance.
Speaking at the singing, Arslan said that 119 or $15 billion dollars-worth of projects have been undertaken by Turkish contractors in Qatar, the Turkish news agency Anatolla reported.
Over the last five years the trading volume between Turkey and Qatar almost tripled to reach $1.3 billion, he added.
“The Al Khor Expressway project will be a great example of collaboration between Qatar and Turkey in the field of construction. Qatar is going to host the FIFA 2022 World Cup and introduce great projects through its 2030 National Vision. Turkish contractors have immense knowledge, experience, workforce in order to accomplish these projects,” Arslan said.
