The construction of a new airport in the northern part of Kuwait has been green lit by authorities. However, the authorities did not disclose the completion date of the project nor its value.
Kuwait currently has an international airport located 9.6-miles south of Kuwait City, which serves as the hub for Kuwait Airways and Jazeera Airways. The setting up of the new airport comes in line with the studies and proposals of the fourth structural plan for Kuwait, sated a report from state news agency Kuna.
The move is said to follow earlier reports stating that the Municipal Committee Council of the Jahra Governorate is coordinating with the Directorate- General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) on allocation of a site for the construction of the new airport.
In November 2021, authorities announced plans to spend nearly $8.2bn on 14 strategic projects aimed at developing the country’s main airport. The key projects include a new terminal, T-2 that is being built at an estimated cost of $5bn at Kuwait International Airport, which can accommodate 25m passengers per annum in addition to a third runway and a control tower.
Limak Construction, a part of leading Turkish conglomerate Limak Group, is the main contractor on the terminal project, which was designed by Foster + Partners. 40% of construction work has been completed and T2 is expected to be one of the most advanced and eco-friendly airports in the world and an iconic gateway to Kuwait.
