Saudi authorities have announced that infrastructure work is moving at a steady pace on the Jeddah Economic City megaproject. 90% of road construction and landscaping work has been completed.

The project is one of the key megaprojects in the Kingdom and will consist of 210 towers that will be over 30 floors high. The centerpiece is to be Jeddah Tower, which is expected to be around 1km tall and will take over from Dubai’s Burj Khalifa as the world’s tallest building, an Arab News report said.

“The main goal of the 5.3m sqm project is to create a habitable, economically beneficial and environmentally friendly space. 90% of the work on road construction and landscaping in the city is done,” said Fady Nassim, executive head of urban planning for Jeddah Economic City, while speaking at the Urban Landscape Saudi 2021 event.

He added, “The landscaping is being done in such a way that it ensures plenty of green space and room for pedestrians, with less emphasis on cars and traffic.”

The project will consist of three sectors once it is complete: a financial district, a residential district and Al-Balad, which will be a contemporary recreation of the old quarter of Jeddah, he concluded.
