Saudi Arabia’s The Agency for Projects and Engineering at the General Presidency for the Affairs of the Grand Mosque and the Prophets Mosque has granted permission for the resumption of expansion works at the Grand Mosque, it has been announced.

According to a report by the Saudi Press Agency, the scope of work includes installation of artificial stone ceilings, completion of architectural arches overlooking the courtyard, and the work at the main gates.

The report added that the Agency discussed the plan, the work schedule and stages of implementing the remaining works after coordination and concerted efforts of the relevant authorities, while also taking advantage of the significantly reduced number of pilgrims in the mosque, owing to the COVID-19 restrictions.

The agency said that the Saudi government is keen to complete the expansion projects related to the two holy mosques and provide comfort to all visitors to the Grand Mosque, while taking all necessary precautions and preventive measures, in cooperation with the relevant authorities.

Saudi Arabia has halted religious journeys to the two holy mosques in Mecca and Medina as part of strict measures to curb the spread of the pandemic.
