450MW solar plant to be built in south-central Vietnam

A 450-megawatt solar plant, the largest of its kind in Southeast Asia, will be built in the south-central province of Ninh Thuan in Vietnam, it has been announced.

According to a WAM report, construction of the solar farm in Phuoc Minh commune will start in the second quarter of 2020, and will complete by the fourth quarter of this year, citing a report from Vietnam News Agency (VNA), which quoted a report from Trugnam Group, the investor of the project.

The $592 million plant will begin generating power by the of the year, the report added.

As per the province’s socio-economic masterplan, Ninh Thuan intends to become Vietnam’s renewable energy hub, with a total capacity of 8,000MW by 2030, the VNA report added.

Vietnam is working to limit its use of fossil fuel, and its government has said that it would look to more than double its power generation capacity over the next decade to 125-130 gigawatts, in order to support economic growth.
