Bahrain’s Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) has announced the launch of a 12km-long vital 220kV power line that will link the districts of Seef and Prince Salman City in the Kingdom.

In a statement, EWA said that the project comes as part of the Kingdom’s $1.24 billion power infrastructure development plan, which will see 15 220kV substations and 48 66kV substations being set up across the country, along with high-voltage cables.

With the launch of the power line, the transmission of power between Bahrain and other Gulf countries will also become easier, and will be at the full 1,200MW capacity, the authority added.

During the inauguration of the power line, Shaikh Nawaf Bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, CEO of EWA, said that it would be the main feeder for Prince Salman City because of the importance of increasing the reliability and safety of the electricity network.

He stated that this contributes to providing power to the northern province in general and the Prince Salman City in particular. It will also help private developers’ projects by providing them with the required reliable source of energy, he added.

Shaikh Nawaf said that the 220kV line was of vital importance in securing the requirements of the electrical connection between the power network in Bahrain and the GCC electrical grid in relation to the exchange of electrical energy, especially in emergency situations, and that it was an important factor in enhancing the reliability of the country’s electrical grid.

ALS Korea, a leading company, manufactured and supplied the electrical cables and installed them, along with several Bahraini contracting companies, while the implementation of the package was supervised by the Irish International Electric Company.
