The Netherlands pavilion for Expo 2020 Dubai has been unveiled with the theme being ‘uniting water, energy and food’ and the pavilion having the ability to produce its own water, renewable energy and organic mushrooms.

The project worth about $22.1 million will be built by Netherlands-based firms, V8 Architects, Kossmann.dejong, and Witteveen+Bos and Swiss-based Expomobilia.

Sigrid Kaag, Dutch foreign trade and development minister said: “We’re proud of this wonderful design, which shows what the Netherlands is all about.”

“Developing unique integrated solutions that create links, especially in the areas of water, energy and food, where we are world leaders,” he added.

The pavilion will have a massive cone-like structure covered with plants and will concentrate on the connection between water, energy and food and aims to shed direction on global issues such as water scarcity, food scarcity and rising energy demands.

The pavilion will be built entirely from locally available materials, such as steel walls ad sheet piling, as well as all the materials will be returned or resold to the industry once its dismantled at the end of the Expo 2020 Dubai.

Official statement from the Dutch Government also mentioned that the Netherlands is keen to contribute home-grown solutions that link the issues of water, energy and food by using innovation, knowledge and expertise to help the Gulf region create a greener, more sustainable future.

Hans Sandee, the Dutch Consul-General to Dubai said: “It’s a real calling card for the Netherlands. And we’re looking forward to receiving members of the public and lots of visitors from the business world.”

The Dutch pavilion will be located at the Expo’s 2020 Sustainable Thematic District.
