The Government of Bahrain has awarded a $364m contract to a consortium of three contracting companies for the upgrade of the Tubli Wastewater Treatment Plant. The consortium is made up of WTE Water Technology, Azmeel Contracting Company and Tekton Engineering and Construction.

The upgrade will be the fourth in the plant’s history and will boost its performance and increase the production of the treated water used for irrigation and agricultural beautification, said a statement from the Ministry of Works, Municipalties Affairs and Urban Planning. The expansion includes the construction of residue disposal facilities.

Speaking at the contract award ceremony, the minister of works, municipalties affairs and urban planning, Issam bin Abdullah Khalaf said the project ‘meets the needs of urban development and population boom by increasing the plant’s capacity from 200,000cu/m to 400,000cu/m per day’.

Funding for the project is being sourced from the Saudi Fund for Development and the Kuwait Fund for Economic Development within the GCC Development Programme for Bahrain.

The project will be delivered within three years, with two months provisioned for operational testing, Khalaf added.
