More than 84% of the construction work on the four reactor units of the Barakah Nuclear Energy plant has been completed, as per a statement from the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC).

Senior UAE officials and nuclear energy experts from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) visited the plant on October 29, to observe key updates on the construction of the plant’s four APR-1400 reactor units. All four reactors have been designed by Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO).

Each unit is being developed to the highest stands of nuclear quality, safety and security according to ENEC. Unit 1 is more than 96% complete, while Unit 2 is now over 87% complete. Units 3 and 4 stand at 78% and 58% complete respectively.

ENEC noted that all four units, once completed, will deliver clean, efficient and reliable electricity from nuclear energy to the UAE grid, following regulatory reviews and the relevant licensing. The plant is to have a total capacity of 5,380MW. Once fully operational, the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant is expected to save up to 21m tons of carbon emissions each year.

The plant is located approximately 50Km west of Ruwais and the total construction cost is expected to be $30bn.
