Work on the Iran-Afghanistan railway project is progressing at a steady pace, with completion of the network scheduled for early 2018, a senior Iranian railway official has said.

The network, which will link the two neighbours, is part of Iran’s priority to link its railway system to its bordering countries, a report in the Iran Daily said.

“Iran has extended its railways up to the Afghan border, however the remaining portion within Afghanistan is expected to be completed by 2018,” Iran’s deputy head for operation affairs Hossein Ashouri was quoted as saying.

He added that the infrastructure in Afghanistan is also ready, with two railing blocks currently under construction in its territory.

In 2016, a separate report from Terrapin Middle East said that Iran has planned investments of $24.6 billion in its railway development, one of the largest investment plans in the Middle East region.
