A worker has died at the site of a stadium being built for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, officials said on Saturday.

An investigation into the incident at the under-construction Al Wakrah Stadium has been launched, according to the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy.

“It is with deep regret we announce a work-related fatality on one of our projects. Following an incident on Al Wakrah Stadium on Saturday morning, a full investigation is underway to determine the factors which contributed to the death of one of our workers,” the committee said in a statement.

“The relevant authorities were immediately informed and the family of the deceased have been notified. We offer them all the necessary support they may need at such a difficult time.”

The Al Wakrah Stadium stadium was designed by the late British architect Zaha Hadid.

The incident follows another investigation launched in May over the death of steel worker Jaleshwar Prasad, a 48-year-old Indian national employed on the Al Bayt Stadium project.

There have been numerous allegations of human rights abuse against workers in Qatar. Despite claims by authorities that many of the issues had been addressed, Amnesty International said in March that migrant workers employed on a World Cup stadium refurbishment project in Qatar are still suffering from abuses.
