Abu Dhabi’s government has announced plans to launch a major redevelopment project for the oases in the city of Al Ain, along with a number of historical and archaeological landmarks found in local castles and forts.

The move comes following a directive from HH Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, a report from WAM said.

The project will be developed in co-ordination with the Abu Dhabi Authority for Tourism and Culture, along with other concerned authorities.

The report added that the authorities would soon devise plans and mechanisms for the development of the oases into full-service destinations for visitors, tourists and residents. Sheikh Mohamed instructed the Court of Abu Dhabi Crown Prince to coordinate and work with all associated stakeholders.

Furthermore, the development will take into consideration the special characteristics of the area, along with their historic value to the country and its people. In the past, these oases were economic, social and developmental lifelines in their area. Services in these sites are to be improved through the establishment of diverse facilities.

In addition, the programme will look to safeguard the cultural heritage of Abu Dhabi emirate, promoting national pride and raising cultural awareness amongst UAE citizens. Sheikh Mohamed also called for better utilisation of these historic sites, so as to develop the tourism sector and raise the economic profile of the UAE capital, in line with Abu Dhabi Vision 2030.
