Dubai Municipality has announced that a new committee has been formed to review and update the technical specifications for buildings in the emirate.

Made up of members from the municipality and Civil Defence, the committee aims to ensure the safety of buildings in Dubai, and the conservation of natural resources in a sustainable manner. In addition, the committee will look to prevent duplication inspection, supervision and licensing of buildings within the emirate.

Hussain Nasser Lootah, director-general of Dubai Municipality, said that the committee would be headed by Khalid Mohammad Saleh Al Mulla, director of the Buildings Department at Dubai Municipality.

As part of its remit, the committee will oversee the reviewing and updating of the requirements and technical specifications for buildings. It will also issue manuals relating to these specifications, specifically those concerning external cladding and insulation.

Furthermore, it will also communicate and coordinate with various stakeholders in Dubai to review the current procedures for issuing building permits, with the aim being to standardise the process.

A team of experts will be created to review cladding works, supervised by the committee, with the materials used for fire insulation and fire systems required to be of the best safety standards. This team will also keep track of all executed buildings and those still under construction to ensure that non-flammable materials have been used in their external cladding and facades.
