The Sharjah Investment and Development Authority (Shurooq) has announced the completion of the first phase of an eco-tourism project in the emirate, with another AED250 million ($68m) of investments planned over the next few years.

The Mleiha Archaeological and Eco-tourism Project includes one of the most important archaeological sites in the UAE, including various ruins and burial sites that date back to ancient times.

The project is set to be officially opened on January 27, according to state news agency WAM.

The first phase will see the opening of the Mleiha Archaeological Centre, which includes educational displays with historical facts about the region.

Shurooq will soon embark of phase two of the Mleiha project “in collaboration with relevant partners”, WAM reported. That phase will involve the construction of Mleiha National Desert Park over an area of 450 square kilometres, and the establishment of an astronomy observatory.
