Two quarries in the UAE have been shut down after authorities found them to be violating regulations, according to state news agency WAM.
Facilities in Fujairah and Ajman were shut by the Ministry of Environment and Water for breaking rules “governing stone quarries and crusher units”, it was reported. The facilities in breach of the regulations were not named.
The closures come as the ministry looks to enforce compliance to laws and regulations designed to protect public health and the environment, WAM said.
Saif Mohammed Al-Shara, the ministry’s assistant under-secretary for external audit, said violations have included the heavy spread of dust, and belts carrying materials not being sufficiently covered.
The ministry conducted a series of scheduled and random field visits to quarry sites throughout the year, Al-Shara said. It is holding workshops on existing laws and to promote environmental sustainability, public health and safety.
