The UAE’s ‘midday break’ rule will see an estimated 500,000 Dubai construction workers down tools during the hottest part of the day over summer, according to estimates.

The Permanent Committee for Labour Affairs (PCLA) in Dubai has launched an awareness campaign to ensure that companies adhere to the rules, according to state news agency WAM.
Most UAE labourers are prohibited from working under direct sunlight between 12.30pm and 3pm until September 15.
“An estimated half million construction workers in Dubai will benefit from the Ministry of Labour’s three-month mandatory midday break regulation this year and the labour committee will follow up on its enforcement,” WAM reported.
PCLA inspection teams will monitor for violations and offer guidance to workers and companies.
Violators will be fined Dh5,000 per worker found working during the break, and up to Dh50,000 if the issue involves a number of workers. Authorities may also consider temporarily suspending a firm in case of a breach.
