More than 1,000 employees of a construction company based in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia have gone on strike over non-payment of their salaries, according to media reports.

The workers have refused to work, with some disconnecting the electricity to the establishment in protest at not being paid for six months, Arab News reported.

A number of employees allegedly damaged the company’s property and attacked administrative staff during a demonstration on the grounds, according to media reports.

The name of the company was not disclosed.

Ahmed Salem, a worker at the company, told local media that workers had been suffering for more than six months. “Both foreign and Saudi employees have not been paid for far too long,” he was quoted as saying.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Labour, Khalid Aba Al-Kheil, told local media that the authorities would follow up the issue and take action against the company. “The ministry received a number of complaints and it has stopped all its services to the company,” he was quoted as saying.
