Larsen & Toubro (Oman) has been awarded a $93.1 million contract to construct the terminal building and associated facilities for a regional airport in Oman, believed to be in Sohar, it has been reported.

According to a stock market filing on the Bombay Stock Exchange, the Indian contractor’s Oman subsidiary bagged the order for a regional airport in the Sultanate of Oman.

“The scope of work includes the construction of a passenger terminal building, an air traffic control (ATC) complex, cargo and other service buildings, including mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) works, special systems and external works,” the contractor said.

Although the filing did not specify where the airport was located, a Times of Oman report said that it was likely to be the Sohar Airport, tenders for which were invited a few months ago.

The project is scheduled to be completed in two years and is the third airport to be executed by L&T in the Sultanate, after Salalah and Duqm.

Like the Duqm airport, the terminal building in Sohar is designed to handle half a million passengers a year. The scope of work (for the third package) will include two air bridges to connect the terminal with aircraft.

The first and second packages for Sohar airport were completed in 2015, which followed local carrier Oman Air starting a regular service to Muscat using a temporary terminal building. The first two packages included civil and infrastructure works, such as the construction of a four kilometre long runway, 30 kilometres of airport service roads and other vital infrastructure systems, such as a rainwater protection system, power plants and a wastewater treatment plant.

The development of three additional regional airports – Sohar, Duqm and Ras Al Hadd – are part of a major initiative by the government of Oman to build airport infrastructure so as to meet increased travel demand from tourists, business people and the local community.
