At least 11 people have been killed in a building collapse in Mumbai, India, the BBC reported.

Many others are feared trapped still in the three-storey building in the Thane district, which was reportedly home to five families.

Reports suggest that the municipality had already served a notice declaring the 50-year-old building dangerous to live in, but residents refused to leave.

In the last two years more than 100 people have died in residential building collapses in Mumbai, where property prices are still among the highest in Asia.

Currently 60% of 18 million people in Mumbai reside in old rundown buildings, 14,000 of which are more than 70 years old, it was reported.
