A railway linking all six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states is scheduled to be operating by 2018, according to press reports.

The planned passenger and cargo line will link Kuwait City in the northwest and Muscat in the southeast, passing through cities such as Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

According to the GCC Secretariat General, the line will be completed in three years, the Kuwait Times reported.

The rail project is set to cost more than $15.4 billion, span 2,117km and include a bridge between Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, the newspaper reported.

Passenger trains will travel at 220 km/hr, and cargo trains at up to 120 km/hr, it was reported.
