Schindler Group, the global provider of elevators, escalators and related services, has announced that it has been awarded a contract to deliver, install and maintain 136 elevators and 272 escalators for the Cairo Monorail Project.

In a statement, Schindler said that the landmark project will help to connect Egypt’s New Administrative City to East Cairo.

“Cairo Monorail is Schindler’s first public transport project in Egypt, showing our growth trajectory in the region,” said Julio Arce, Member of the Schindler Group Executive Committee responsible for Europe South. “Safety and reliability are our prime commitments. With our state-of-the-art equipment we look forward to securing a seamless mobility experience to millions of passengers in Cairo.”

The announcement comes in the wake of an agreement last year, where Schindler was appointed for the delivery and installation of 129 high-rise elevators to six office towers currently under construction in Egypt’s New Administrative Capital, which has been designed to become a high-tech model for Egypt’s future.

The city, known simply as the New Administrative Capital, will be Egypt’s first smart city, covering 700 square kilometers in the desert east of Cairo, making it the size of Singapore. Designed as the country’s new administrative hub, it is expected to house 6.5 million people. Its official opening is planned for the end of 2021.
