Emirates Central Cooling Systems (Empower) announced that the length of its district cooling transmission network in Dubai increased by 10% in 2020. The company said the network’s length of 350.4km is 423 times the height of the Burj Khalifa.

In a statement the firm noted that its new pipeline technologies contribute to reducing carbon emissions and reducing water and energy consumption, by providing efficient and environmentally-friendly district cooling services that allow it to maintain cooling, without being affected by external factors and high temperatures.

In 2020, the firm said it awarded contracts worth $69.4m to expand its district cooling network for various developments including Dubai Production City, Business Bay, Barsha Heights, Dubai Land Residence Complex, Dubai International Financial Center (DIFC), and DIAC projects. It noted that it kicked off operations of two new cooling plants in Mirdif and Jumeirah Village Circle (JVC) and interconnected two areas (JVC and Jumeirah Village Triangle), with a capacity of 260,000RT.

Empower CEO Ahmad bin Shafar noted that the company’s transmission network expansion is yet to meet the growing demand for environmentally friendly district cooling services. He stated that the expansion is part of Empower’s efforts to develop infrastructure that contributes to achieving the objectives of Dubai’s sustainable development plans.

The statement noted that the company’s expansion covered new areas, with the Business Bay’s network covering projects located on both sides of Sheikh Zayed Road, most notably the Coca-Cola Arena and Wasl Tower. The district cooling provider also said that its expansion in Dubai International Financial Center helped supply services to One Za’abeel and the Wasl1 developments.

Empower said it also connected several iconic projects to its district cooling network such as Avani Palm View Dubai Hotel & Suites, Ain Dubai, and others. It also started providing district cooling services at a capacity of 2,100RTs to three stations in Route 2020 of the Dubai Metro last year.

Bin Shafar concluded by saying the firm is striving to accelerate the completion of construction works in multiple development projects, in a bid to ensure the readiness of its network to provide new destinations with high quality district cooling services.
