The GCC Interconnection Authority (GCCIA), and officials from Egypt and Jordan have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to boost cooperation into a detailed technical study on electrical interconnection between the three parties.

The memo was signed by Egyptian Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy, Mohammad Shaker, Jordanian Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Hala Al-Zawati and GCCIA Chairman, Sheikh Nawaf Al Khalifa.

According to a report from the Bahrain News Agency (BNA), the electrical interconnection grid would link between GCC Interconnection Authority Grid which interconnects the six GCC countries through a 400 kV overhead line with a length of around 1400 km to the interconnection point in Jordan, and then interconnect with Egypt with a 400 kV overhead line with a length of around 780 km.

The interconnection would transmit around 2000 MW of power between the GCC countries, Egypt, and Jordan in the first phase of the interconnection project. This power transmission capacity might be increased according to the electrical demand of the connected parties, it added.

HE Shaikh Nawaf Bin Ebrahim Al-Khalifa Chairman of the Board of GCC Interconnection Authority stated to the BNA, that the GCC interconnection Project is considered one of the most important strategic infrastructure development between GCC member states. He added that this was supported by GCC leaders enabling the GCC countries to achieve strategic Energy Security and increasing the level of resilience and reliability of member states Power Systems.

The MoU was signed on 5th November in Cairo during the 13th meeting of the Arab Ministerial Council for Electricity which was held in Leage of Arab States headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.
