Four new pedestrian tunnels are being planned in Madinah as part of a plan to allow easier access to the Prophet’s Mosque, the Madinah Development Authority has said.

According to a report by the Saudi Gazette, the Authority plans to develop the tunnels as part of a strategy to decrease traffic flow and improve pedestrian safety on King Faisal Road, which leads to the Mosque.

The developments come as a part of an overall plan by Prince Faisal Bin Salman, Madinah Emir and chairman of the Al-Madinah Development Authority, to improve the city. The four tunnels will extend to 125 metres each and will have elevators specifically built to accommodate the elderly and people with special needs.

Furthermore, the tunnels will have air conditioning systems, firefighting systems, lighting and sound systems, as well as security surveillance systems, the Saudi Press Agency added.
