The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has announced that 70% of the work on the Jebel Ali M-Station Expansion project is complete. Siemens and DEWA have been working on the construction, engineering and operations work of the plant since 2015.

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) recently reviewed progress of the M-Station expansion project with representatives from Siemens. Al Tayer was also joined by other senior executives from DEWA and M-Station.

A reported $3.1bn has been invested into the construction and expansion work of the M-Station plant, and once the project has been completed, the station’s total capacity will reach 2,885MW. The additional capacity is being provided through the addition of new power generating units, which will add 700MW to the station’s existing capacity.

The expansion project includes the addition of two dual-fuel gas turbine generators, two heat-recovery steam boilers, and a steam turbine that is 90% fuel efficient. This will increase the plant’s thermal efficiency from 82.4% to 85.8%, which is said to be one of the highest thermal-efficiency rates in the world.

As per DEWA’s announcement, 45,000m3 of concrete has been poured to date (96% of total project), and 4,900 tonnes of structural steel and heavy metal work has been erected (75% complete). The project has also recorded a total of 8.3-million safe man-hours (no injuries).
