Arabtec Construction has won a $96m contract to build the UAE Pavilion for Expo 2020 Dubai, as per a filing to the Dubai Financial Market (DFM). The pavilion was designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava and resembles a falcon in flight.

The project will be located opposite Al Wasl Plaza in the centre of Expo 2020’s 4.38 sq km exhibition area. Arabtec Construction, a wholly owned subsidiary of UAE-based Arabtec Holding, will begin work on the project later this month, with handover scheduled for the last quarter of 2019.

“The UAE Pavilion project marks yet another achievement on our roadmap to a sustainable and successful future. It highlights our strategic focus on the UAE as our core market, and also demonstrates our commitment to building our future through the development of social infrastructure, in addition to instilling a performance-based culture within our organisation,” said Hamish Tyrwhitt, group chief executive officer of Arabtec Construction.

The UAE Pavilion will have a total built-up area of 19,2000m2, and will comprise a 2,000sqm upper floor, and a 662sqm mezzanine floor. The plaza level and ancillary facilities will be spread across 3,000sqm. The pavilion’s ground level will house a garden and car park, spread over some 13,300sqm.

Expo 2020 Dubai will open on October 20, 2020 and close on April 10, 2021.
