Nakheel has announced the launch of a new monorail station on the Palm Jumeriah, with trains now stopping at Al Ittihad Park. The Dubai-based developer has also added that there are more new stations on track for the monorail, which runs along the Palm’s ‘trunk’, through the Atlantis Hotel on the Crescent.

Passengers using the Palm Monorail will be able to board and alight at the newly-opened station, which will allow them easy access to Palm Jumeirah’s central park, thousands of residences and the Golden Mile Galleria Mall, the developer added in a statement.

Nakheel also said that the monorail currently sees more than a million passengers annually, and the figure was set to rise with the opening of more attractions on the island. Upcoming developments such as Nakheel Mall and The Pointe will have their own monorail stop.

The number of Palm Monorail users has increased by 70% over the last four years. In 2013, there were 590,000 passengers. By 2015, that number had risen to 878,000. By 2016, it had crossed the million mark. With around 3,000 people making trips per day, 2017 expects to see more than 1.1 million passengers, it said.

“The Palm Monorail is one of Palm Jumeirah’s biggest success stories. The opening of Al Ittihad Park Station is a massive boost for the island’s investors, residents, visitors and retailers, and further cements our commitment to providing new services and attractions at this world-famous community,” said Ali Rashid Lootah, chairman of Nakheel.

“More people than ever can now enjoy the growing number of facilities on Palm Jumeirah – without using a car to reach them.”

The Palm Monorail, which opened in 2009, currently runs from Gateway Station to Atlantis Aquaventure, stopping at the new Al Ittihad Park Station in between.
