Three workers have been killed, while several others have been injured in a deadly incident at a construction site for a Qatar Armed Forces project, it has been announced.

According to a statement issued by the state news agency, QNA, the deaths occurred during an incident at the construction site, which belongs to the defence forces. The announcement was made on Tuesday evening by the Ministry of Defence, the report added.

The Ministry expressed its ‘sincere condolences’ to the families of the deceased, and wished the injured a speedy recovery, the statement added.

Furthermore, the Ministry reiterated its commitment to abiding by the highest safety standards across all its facilities.

However, no further details were provided about the incident, nor was the nationality of the victims revealed. The cause of death and number of injured were also not revealed by the ministry.

According to a report released by BMI Research, Qatar will be amongst the top five fastest growing construction markets globally, within the next five years. The Gulf country currently ranks third in the list, which is topped by Myanmar and Ethiopia respectively, while Pakistan and the Philippines come fourth and fifth.

The Gulf country has long been criticised by human rights groups over the treatment and safety of its construction workforce. The tiny, gas-rich country is relying on a large workforce of mainly South-East Asian labourers to build stadiums and related infrastructure for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
