Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minster of the UAE, and Ruler of Dubai, has made the installation of backup generators at large buildings and key projects in Dubai mandatory. Sheikh Mohammed issued the orders during a visit to the head office of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), a day after a power outage hit The Dubai Mall.

Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince, and Sheikh Maktoum Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai, were also present during the visit to DEWA.

The Dubai Mall experienced a power cut earlier in the week, as a result of a technical issue on a high-capacity power line. DEWA was able to restore power to the mall in about 90-minutes.

During his visit to DEWA headquarters, Sheikh Mohammed was given a detailed explanation on the power cut. He then issued the orders, which asks that all real estate developers, consultants, and contractors developing tourist, commercial and cultural projects in the city, install power generators to ensure uninterrupted power supply to their developments.

DEWA is charged with following-up on the orders, and will directly supervise its implementation at all key buildings and developments in the city.
