Ramboll Middle East has secured a contract to act as technical advisor for a 500 MW district cooling project in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, the company announced.
The Denmark-headquartered company said it will deliver the conceptual design and provide procurement assistance to its client, the Umm Al Qura for Development & Construction Company, for the Abdul Aziz Road Project.
The total construction area of the project covers 6.3 million square metres, and the timeframe is approximately 10 years.
“This is simply a grand project. The project will need 150 MW power to produce the 500 MW of cooling and this has a significant impact on the power network,” said Jens Ole Hansen, head of the international district energy department in Copenhagen.
“Our first deliveries will be the design, location and quantity of the chiller plants together with the piping design and advice on the buildings’ connectivity to the pipeline network. And in phase two we will assist the client in the procurement of the chiller plants.”
The King Abdul Aziz Road Project will run from the city’s outskirts to the Grand Mosque. It will be 3.65km in length, with an average width of 320 meters. It also includes the construction of two roads, metro line, mosque and over 200 plots that will house more than 100,000 people.
The project is expected to improve the conditions for pilgrims during hajj.
